Who is Team Kanary?

In 2020, Team Kanary launched a web app for personal data removal, now loved by over 20,000 people. We’ve raised venture capital from top funds like YC & 2048 and grown to profitability. All with a small dedicated team of privacy nerds: Joe, Steven, A.C, Nikita, Miranda, and Rachel. (And their pets: Zuna, Captain, Goober, Cali, Sunday, and Athena). Our values shape how we build our products and operate day to day.

We're a friendly, tight knit team who may geek out over the super moon, build their own computers, or climb through a window if they’re locked out of an airbnb.

Is the team remote?
Yes, our team is fully remote with a hub in Seattle. We travel for quarterly in-person retreats.

What's the process?
From first intro to final decision, we take two to four weeks to know if it's a good fit. Throughout the process, we want to make sure you can show off your strengths and get to know our team.

Senior Software Engineer

Our mission:

At Kanary, we’re building tools to protect people from the next generation of online threats. Cybersecurity has always been adversarial, but the rise of AI-driven attacks has made them more personal and more automated. That’s why we focus on monitoring and removing personal data, putting privacy and security back in the hands of individuals.

The consumer security industry hasn’t kept up. While bad actors and powerful platforms exploit personal data, most solutions offer false peace of mind with 'set it and forget it' tools that don't work. People want transparency, action, and control. Privacy isn’t about hiding. It’s about giving people agency.

If you're excited to help close the growing gap in online protection for millions, we want to talk to you.

How you'll help achieve it:

We’ve built a set of systems unique to our development environment. You'll help shape hypotheses, track core metrics, and work to move them. We delete code. If something fails, we learn, and then we clean it up. We aim for tech debt to be actionable. We celebrate this ratio on a pull request.

Building the best product and experience for our members is always the goal. Weekly scoping is hands on and collaborative, not top down. You'll work directly with customers in our Discord server to get feedback, share ideas, and fix bugs.

We run quarterly in-person off sites. Living in an Airbnb together for a few days is a stretch of no-distractions time. You'll be able to voice what's holding us back, workshop solutions, and start implementing change immediately with the entire team. Balanced with a flexible and autonomous remote work culture, off sites give us a taste of the silicon valley hacker house without the burn out.

You’ll be architecting and building a system that is rigid enough to provide economies of scale but flexible enough to support infinite integrations. This is an investment in proprietary technology and proprietary data that creates leverage to build better and better systems.

Senior Product Designer

Our mission:

At Kanary, we focus on improving people’s online security. It’s a cat and mouse game and can be adversarial. Cybersecurity has always been this way, but now the scale of AI-driven attacks on individuals is unprecedented. Attacks feel more personal while be more automated than ever. This is why our products focus on personal data monitoring, privacy, and security first.

The consumer security industry has been slow to react and meet the expectations of a digitally native generation. We’re facing the consequences of letting powerful organizations and bad actors have unfettered access to our information. People are waking up and realizing another ‘set it and forget it’ system or insurance policy won’t help. The imperative is to be transparent, actionable, and connected. Privacy isn’t about hiding.

If you’re interested in the opportunity to fill a growing gap in millions of people’s online experience, keep reading.

Why design matters at Kanary

Many security tools are confusing, overwhelming, or lack transparency. They lose people at the exact moment they need support or never reach them at all. At Kanary, we see design as a bridge that makes the complex feel simple, the experience feel safe, and the next steps feel obvious.

This work isn’t about technical controls and status updates. It’s about clarity, trust, and meeting people where they are. We move quickly, test early, and keep things simple with room for creativity.

Your day to day

  • Build and maintain a flexible design system, create components from scratch and clarify existing patterns across web, mobile, email, and marketing to accelerate learning

  • Review user session recordings, error states, and churn patterns to test the impact of new features, notifications, onboarding flows, or copy

  • Design product flows from wireframes to high-fidelity UI. Lead design for foundational product features like global controls, chat, and recommendations.

  • Work within weekly sprints and communicate clearly when more challenging work needs more clarity on scope or more time to get to the version members will love.

  • Reference best-in-class UX from inside and outside the security industry, Kanary should feel trustworthy, but never cold or rigid.

  • Spot emotional high points in the user journey and explore ways to highlight and celebrate them.

  • Think critically about what prevents people from being proactive about digital safety, and how we can encourage new habits both inside and outside of the product.

What makes you a good fit?

You're excited to work with a tight-knit startup and see your designs improve customers' safety every day. As the only designer on the team, there will be zero bureaucracy or red tape, but there also won't be many established design best practices or advisors to guide you every step of the way. This should be a positive! And you should be ready to chart your own course and bring your vision to life.

You have experience designing apps for thousands or millions of active users. Our team will want to see several zero-to-one projects in your portfolio as well as experience embedding into an existing design team and system. This level of performance typically comes with 3-5 years of experience or a degree in design, but we believe potential is more important than tenure. For the right person, this role will include the opportunity to grow and lead a design team in the next 6 months.

Community Manager

Your Impact

Kanary’s community of members comes together across Discord, Reddit, and Youtube. We’re fully funded by our members, so we’re looking for the right person to help us invest back into the community. You’ll work with over 30,000 members to help us strengthen and grow. Our vision is to build a welcoming, trustworthy, and engaging place to discuss the opportunities and challenges that come with online exposure and help each other respond to the risks and demands of chronically online culture.

What does the day to day look like?

Discord Management (80% of your time)
  • Keep a pulse on the community. Run daily polls to learn what people want, how they found Kanary, and what keeps them around.

  • Work fast. Respond to community questions within 60 seconds during community hours (8am–6pm PST). Your response time should beat Rachel’s, our founder 😉.

  • Stay on-brand. Make sure messaging in Discord feels aligned with what people see on our site, socials, and elsewhere.

  • Bring the server to life. Use links, images, gifs, and a strong dose of personality to make every channel feel dynamic and welcoming.

  • Translate tech into human. Edit and simplify weekly product announcements from engineers so they land clearly and with context.

  • Drive community energy. Run monthly giveaways/sweepstakes that reward our most engaged users and attract new ones.

  • Build hype. Tease upcoming features for iOS, Android, and Beta groups. Capture community excitement and channel it back to the team to close the loop.

YouTube Engagement (5% of your time)
  • Engage with Kanary’s audience. Reply to comments on videos within 24 hours to keep the conversation going and build community.

  • Keep the space safe. Flag and remove harmful, spammy, or inappropriate comments to maintain a positive environment.

  • Spot potential collaborators. Identify interesting or interested creators in the comments or Feed and connect them with Anna (Partnerships) and Miranda (GTM Lead) for outreach.

  • Don’t worry about going viral. Mastering the YouTube algo is not a focus, the main focus of our team is to successfully create unique interview-based content that feeds a larger content funnel that builds trust, and converts into product use.

Other Social Engagement (5% of your time)
  • Engage in the comments across channels. Respond to comments within 24 hours on our own posts and partner content to build trust, answer questions, and drive community into our Discord and product.

  • Just like on Discord and YouTube, you’ll keep our brand consistent by aligning bios, screenshots, and features. You’ll also keep an eye out for collaboration opportunities with other creators.

  • This is not a content creation role, your focus will be on community management.

IRL Meetups & Conferences (10% of your time)
  • IRL > URL. Find interesting meetups to attend or support in your city to connect with existing or future Kanary members.

  • Meet the pros. Research, prep, and travel to conferences like Def Con and Twitch Con.

  • Herd cats. Organize meet ups, dinners, happy hours, off sites, and virtual sessions with key partners, members, and team Kanary.

What makes you a good fit?

You’re the kind of person who walks into a room full of strangers and walks out with new friends. In your free time, you’re on Discord, YouTube, or Reddit learning new things and building connections. You’re drawn to opportunities that require a friendly and patient approach to community building. While working at Kanary, you’ll automate the boring stuff while saving your mental energy for traveling, meeting people in cybersecurity, and rapidly expanding your/Kanary’s network.

You have a background in marketing, communications, community organizing, or front-of-house service. With 1–3 years of experience, you’re ready for a role where your energy, people skills, and hustle will directly determine how you grow.
