RSAC Innovation Showcase: Stopping AI-Powered Fraud Before It Starts
AI has made convincing fraud cheap. A few seconds of cloned audio, a relative’s name, and a phone number are all a scammer needs to stage a believable “family emergency” call. The voice comes from AI. The rest usually comes from online data exposure.
On October 21, Kanary joined the RSAC Innovation Showcase, Countering AI-Powered Fraud Before It Happens, to talk about how to cut off that supply of personal data before an attack begins.
The panel
The session opened with a discussion moderated by Jenny Brock, Senior Manager of Innovation Programs at RSAC, alongside Alistair Greaves, Director of Red Team Operations at Bugcrowd, and Mark Kraynak, Partner at Acrew Capital, who co-hosted the session.
The panel looked at why traditional fraud controls, built for enterprises, struggle to catch scams at the moment a consumer picks up the phone. They covered three approaches that are changing consumer fraud prevention: behavioral AI that detects voice-cloned and social-engineered scams in real time, live screening of calls and messages, and automated removal of personal data across the internet. A recurring theme was the difference between proactive defenses, which remove what attackers need, and detection-only controls, which wait for the attack to arrive.
The pitch
Following the panel, Kanary and Savi each pitched how they are applying these ideas today. we emphasized why online data exposure isn’t only a privacy compliance issue. It’s an upstream attack surface. Every address, phone number, and family connection available online is raw material for phishing, doxxing, impersonation and physical harm. Removing that information shrinks what attackers have to work with, so the scam call never gets made.
We also argued that these consumer threat models matter for enterprises. Employees’ personal data is often the starting point for executive impersonation and social engineering against the companies they work for.
